  42. 1.1 About File Manager StepUp
  43. -----------------------------

  45. FM StepUp is the powerful and innovative File Manager extender
  46. for Microsoft(R) Windows(tm) 3.1, 3.11, and Windows for Workgroups
  47. (tm) 3.11.
  48.  
  49. FM StepUp makes the File Manager an actually user friendly
  50. application. With FM StepUp installed in your system you will
  51. perform various file management operations easier and faster.
  52.  
  53. FM StepUp enhances standard dialog boxes of the File Manager,
  54. providing them with additional useful features (history lists,
  55. remembering you previous commands; 'verify' check boxes; 'browse'
  56. buttons; etc.).
  57.  
  58. FM StepUp allows you to combine most frequently used commands of
  59. the File Manager into the Quick Menu, so you can access them just
  60. pressing the right button of your mouse.
  61.  
  62. FM StepUp makes your able to easily create, view, edit, or print
  63. arbitrary files, not necessarily associated with an application,
  64. and you can assign your favorite viewer or editor to do this.

  66. FM StepUp provides you with some unique or hard-to-find commands,
  67. allowing you, for example, to figure out the total size of a
  68. directory, including all its subdirectories; change date or time
  69. of the file; run the default screen saver whenever you want it to;
  70. etc.

  72. FM StepUp allows you to add your own commands to the File Manager
  73. and easily execute them. You may use this possibility to launch
  74. frequently used applications (as Corneal Panel or Clipboard viewer)
  75. directly from File Manager menu, or to perform preprogrammed
  76. operations over files selected in a File Manager's window (like
  77. UnZip or UnArj).

  79. If you are a network administrator, FM StepUp can help you to
  80. restrict some of the File Manager's capabilities (in almost the
  81. same way as you do it for the Program Manager), allowing you to
  82. prevent your users from performing potentially dangerous or
  83. undesirable commands.

  85. After all, FM StepUp is highly customizable. You are in charge of
  86. almost every aspect of its functionality - from the size of the
  87. history lists to contents of the Quick Menu and Execute Menu.

  116. not like it by any reason, you should definitely try this one.

  118. SPECIAL NOTE for Windows for Workgroups users: if you had given up
  119. the FM StepUp ver.1.x because of the conflict between FM StepUp
  120. and Toolbar, please take a look at the current version. That bug
  121. has been fixed and they (FM StepUp and toolbar) enjoy each the
  122. other now.

  125. 1.3 How to use the documentation
  126. --------------------------------

  128. The complete information on the FM StepUp software, including the
  129. description of the installation procedure, how to get updates, how
  130. to register your copy, troubleshooting hints, order forms, answers
  131. to frequently asked questions, etc., is available in the Windows
  132. help format, file FMSTEPUP.HLP.

  134. If you have already installed FM StepUp you can access the
  135. information by choosing StepUp | Help from File Manager's menu.
  136.  
  137. Or, double click the 'FM StepUp Help' icon in the FMStepUp group
  138. created for Program Manager after automatic installation.

  140. Or, choose command Run from Program Manager or File Manager main
  141. menu, and enter the full name (including complete path) of the
  142. FMSTEPUP.HLP file. For example, if you have placed the FM StepUp
  143. files into directory TEMP on your hard disk C, enter the following
  144. string into the Run dialog box:

  146.         C:\TEMP\FMSTEPUP.HLP
  147.  
  148. and click OK button.

  150. Another way to view the file is to open the directory window with
  151. the File Manager and double click its filename with the mouse.

  202. You can register your copy of the FM StepUp software with a credit card
  203. (Visa, MC, Amex, or Discover), personal check, money order, or
  204. cash. Please see topic 'How To Register' in the FM StepUp Help for

  209. //      2. INSTALLING File Manager StepUp

  213. Unlike most other Windows applications, FM StepUp is not a
  214. stand-alone program: there is no special executable file you would
  215. run to start the FM StepUp. To use the FM StepUp software, all you
  216. need is properly install it, and it will run automatically every
  217. time you run the File Manager.
  218.  
  219. Please follow these simple rules to install the FM StepUp:
  220.  
  221. 1. If not already running Microsoft Windows, start Windows 3.1 or
  222.    Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
  223.  
  224. 2. If the FM StepUp package came to you compressed, uncompress it
  225.    into some temporary directory on either your hard or floppy
  226.    disk. If you got the package on the original installation
  227.    diskette, insert it into a floppy drive (A or B).
  228.  
  229. 3. Select the File | Run menu option of the Program Manager or
  230.    File Manager, and type into the Run dialog box:
  231.  
  232.                 a:install
  233.  
  234.    and press Enter (or click OK button). If problems occur,
  235.    include the full path to the directory where you have the FM
  236.    StepUp files placed.
  237.  
  238. 4. The installation program will prompt you for any
  239.    additional information needed.
  240.  
  241. 5. The installation program will copy all the necessary files to a
  242.    specified directory on your hard disk, create the program group
  243.    'FMStepUp', and make an entry in the WINFILE.INI file declaring
  244.    the FM StepUp as an extension of the File Manager.
  245.  
  246. After the installation complete, you can immediately start using
  247. File Manager enhanced with FM StepUp.
  248.  
  249. The first time when you run it, FM StepUp will display
  250. registration reminder, and the About FM StepUp screen will read
  251. 'Unregistered copy'. If you have registered your copy and obtained
  252. your personal Registration number from us, you may use it to
  253. remove the registration reminder from the screen and put your name
  254. in the About FM StepUp screen. To do it, choose Preferences from
  255. the StepUp menu of File Manager and when a dialog box pops up,
  256. click the Register button. Now enter your name (exactly as it
  257. appears in your Registration acknowledgment) and the Registration
  258. number.
  259.  
  260. If the automatic installation fails by any reason, you can install
  261. the FM StepUp manually:
  262.  
  263. 1. Create a directory on a hard disk for FM StepUp, say
  264.    C:\FMSTEPUP, and copy all the files from the FM StepUp
  265.    installation disk into that directory. If you obtained the FM
  266.    StepUp files compressed in an archive, extract all the files
  267.    from it.
  268.  
  269. 2. Close File Manager.
  270.  
  271. 3. Copy the file CTL3D.DLL into the Windows SYSTEM directory on
  272.    your hard drive (be sure not to overwrite the newer version of
  273.    this file if you have already got one!). If you are using a
  274.    networked Windows installation and the SYSTEM directory is
  275.    write-protected, put the file CTL3D.DLL into the WINDOWS
  276.    directory.

  278. 4. Open file WINFILE.INI for editing (using Notepad or any other
  279.    text editor). This file is located in the WINDOWS directory on
  280.    your hard disk (or directory you specified when installing
  281.    Windows). Please note: the file you need is WINFILE.INI, not
  282.    WIN.INI.
  283.  
  284.    Find the section [AddOns] in this file and place the following
  285.    string right after the string [AddOns]:
  286.  
  287.         FM StepUp=C:\FMSTEPUP\FMSTEPUP.DLL
  288.  
  289.    (or specify the directory you copied the FM StepUp's files in,
  290.    if other than FMSTEPUP).
  291.  
  292.    The resulting portion of the WINFILE.INI should look like
  293.    this:

  300.    (... means other lines of the file). Save the file.

  302. 5. Run File Manager.
  303.  
  304. You shell find new menu item, StepUp, among the other items of the
  305. File Manager's main menu, if the installation has been completed
  306. successfully. If you cannot see the StepUp item in the main menu
  307. of the File Manager, an error has occurred. Please verify that you
  308. have done all the steps above, and, particularly, specified
  309. correct path in the [AddOns] section of the WINFILE.INI file.
